Programs
Programs are little known activities in college that can provide tremendous opportunities for advancement. They cover a wide range of activities. It is hard to categorize them. As you have seen in the above example, the Congressional Black Caucus Internships Program, was a program and internship rolled into one. When I mention programs, I am referring to any organized opportunity that exposes you to a specific field or experience. Here are a few I will review:
1.Research and Summer Programs
2.Fellowships
3.Events & Conferences
4.Study Abroad
There are many programs that disguise themselves as internships, study abroad experiences, summer opportunities, etc. If you participate in one of those programs that alone will make you a distinctive candidate. Ask around your department, your teachers, or fellow classmates to find out about as many as possible. There are almost always additional programs that schools offer to enhance their student body experiences. Be a part of the select few that participate in these activities and stand out from the competition.
Research and Summer Programs
If you want to go to graduate school, you should consider getting involved in a research program. These programs give you the skills, insight, and network that will make you a competitive candidate. Moreover, if you ever wanted to study a specific subject or issue, these programs will pay you to do it.
The National Institute of Mental Health Career Opportunities in Research (NIHM-COR) Honors Undergraduate Research Training Program was one of the best programs I ever participated in. It provided 75 percent of tuition, a monthly stipend of over $900, research training classes, funding for trips to conferences, and support from mentors who let us work in their research labs. NIHM-COR was one of the most supportive and transforming programs I have ever participated in. Dr. Margaret Weber-Levine and Dr. Karen Brakke facilitated a program that trained groups of about twenty students for two years in advanced research methods. In our group were some of the top scholars at our institution and in our departments. We conducted research and presented our findings across the country. The financial, staff, and group support was unmatched by any other program at my school. It was the premier program to support a studentâs career development at Morehouse. My research, writing, and presentation skills grew exponentially because of the countless hours of classes, training, one-on-one mentorship, and support from my peers. I found out about the program by checking a bulletin board in my department and then talking to the department secretary and a few professors about it. The Atlanta University Consortiumâs (AUC) NIMH-COR program is directly responsible for the research that laid the foundation of the book you have in your hands.
Another program I was involved in was the University of California â Berkeley Summer Research Opportunities Program. I received an all-expense paid trip to Berkeley, California where I lived rent-free in a beautiful dormitory for international students located on the side of a hill that overlooked all of the Bay area for almost three months. I had a research mentor, Dr.
